USDA has released new meal pattern requirements for the school year 2012-2013.

USDA Child Nutrition standards are critically needed to help combat the epidemic of childhood obesity as well as the urgent problem of childhood hunger.  Nearly 1 in 3 children are at risk for preventable diseases like diabetes and heart disease due to overweight and obesity.  While parents are ultimately responsible for the nutrition and health of their children, schools also have a responsibility to promote and deliver nutritious appetizing meals.  Burnet C.I.S.D. has been proactive with these new regulations and has developed menus and revised recipes to meet the new regulations.

A major change in the new meal pattern requirement will include minimal and maximum levels of grains and meats offered weekly.  The new meal pattern requirement will also include more whole grain rich foods, require weekly offering of dark green and orange/red vegetables, require daily offering of fruits, require reducing sodium, requirements on milk fat, and calorie levels.

Five components are offered daily.  Students may select all five components or may take three components, one component must be a fruit or vegetable for a full meal.  Meals are priced as a unit; however, each item is available a la carte.
